School Nurse jobs: frequently asked questions

(Updated Dec 2024)

Welcome to our School Nurse jobs page, featuring the very latest school nursing roles across the UK, as well as frequently asked questions below.

What is a School Nurse?

A School Nurse is a qualified and NMC registered Nurse supporting children within a school or other community settings.

School Nurses can work with young or older children, in both state and private schools.

It’s a specialised role that often involves working with or leading a team of other community Nurses and healthcare workers.

What are the daily responsibilities of a School Nurse?

Duties can vary greatly from job to job, but broadly they may include:

• Identifying risks by carrying our health assessments

• Offering individual support to children

• Early identification of vulnerability

• Supporting children with long-term health needs

• Educational services including sexual health support

• Co-ordinating plans and services with other healthcare professionals

How do you become a School Nurse?

To become a School Nurse you first need a nursing degree and to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).

Thereafter, you’ll need to enrol on a Specialist Community Public Health Nursing – School Nursing (SCPHN - SN) programme. This is a 1-year course, although it can be completed over a longer period, part-time.

The course is 50% theory and 50% in placement, and you’ll need to be sponsored by a health provider or organisation.

Typically, School Nurses therefore spend the early part of their careers in more general nursing posts before making the decision to specialise in school nursing.

You’ll also need a strong interest in working with children, as well as clear leadership skills in addition to the traits any Nurse needs – such as patience and compassion.

How much does a School Nurse earn?

School Nurses don’t always work through the NHS, but when they do the starting salary is at Band 6 – which is currently £37,339 a year.

Many School Nurses are actually employed by local authorities, where salaries can start a little lower than this.

According to the latest stats, the average salary for a School Nurse across any sector is around £35,000 to £45,000 a year.

In the private sector salaries can sometimes be a bit higher, but they vary more widely.
