Occupational Health Nurse jobs: frequently asked questions

(Updated Dec 2024)

Welcome to our Occupational Health Nurse jobs page. Here’s where you’ll find all our latest Occupational Health Nurse jobs, as well as answers to the most common questions below.

What does an Occupational Health Nurse do?

Occupational Health Nurses are specialists in providing care within workplaces.

They are qualified, Registered Nurses who typically acquire extra qualifications and experience in public health settings.

As an Occupational Health Nurse you have direct contact with employees at organisations and are often approached with problems or questions.

Those questions can be associated with physical or mental health challenges both at work or out of work.

You can be employed by public sector or private sector organisations.

As for daily duties, they vary a lot from one day to the next.

How do you become an Occupational Health Nurse?

Technically, your only requirement for becoming an Occupational Health Nurse is to be a qualified, NMC registered Nurse.

However, you typically need to also take an approved course in Specialist Community Public Health Nursing - Occupational Health Nursing (SCPHN - OHN).

This potentially could be taken within a new occupational health nursing role.

However, regardless of where you’re at in your career, you’ll likely need to show some experience in or knowledge of public health related work.

How much does an Occupational Health Nurse earn?

The starting salary for an Occupational Health Nurse is roughly between £35,000 and £40,000 a year, according to the best available figures.

But this is a rough estimate, as exact figures are hard to pinpoint.

That’s because many occupational health roles are within the private sector, where vary a lot from one company to the next.

As for an average salary, salaries probably range between £40,000 and £45,000 a year, again, according to the best available figures.

At the top end, highly experienced Occupational Health Nurses can earn above £55,000 a year.

At this level, it’s likely the role will be highly specialised. You may even be called a Senior Occupational Health Nurse or a Senior Occupational Health Advisor.
