Jobs which involve assessing nurses can be found in universities offering a nursing degree and those institutions training dental nurses. The nurse assessor job involves assessing student nurses’ theoretical knowledge and practical skills as they advance through their training to make sure they have the necessary competencies and meet the required standards to practice safely when qualified. Vacancies are also found within NHS acute trusts and private hospitals to continually assess the standard of nursing care to ensure compliance with all the applicable regulations (Care Quality Commission (CQC), Health and Safety, etc.) and with the standards of the Nursing and Midwifery Council. You’ll find that this kind of work in the community is more patient focussed. These jobs involve assessments for:

  • Eligibility for Continuing Healthcare (CHC) from the NHS
  • The monitoring and reviewing of CHC cases
  • Screening of CHC prior to Funded Nursing Care (FNC) applications
  • Funded Nurse Care as per the applicable legislation
  • Nursing needs of individuals and communities
  • Fast Tract assessments
  • Care of the Dying Patient
  • Nursing homes – to ensure compliance with CQC and all legislation and regulations (including staff training, the standard of nursing care provided, etc.)
  • Residential care – again for compliance and standards of service offered
  • Care home matching and monitoring – to make sure patients are placed in the appropriate home for their needs and that the highest standards of appropriate care are maintained
  • Rapid response both in Accident and Emergency (A&E) departments and clinical decisions units
  • Immediate care
  • Mental capacity and mental health problems
  • Physical disabilities, learning disabilities and brain injuries
All assessments require the completion, submission and storage of accurate and comprehensive reports and documentation. A nurse assessor job also involves attending multidisciplinary team meetings to help make decisions regarding the required nursing, medical and other healthcare interventions for individual patients plus educating all related healthcare colleagues regarding patient care. Jobs also provide education, training and support for other healthcare professionals and the community in CHC and FNC. Nurse assessor vacancies require highly skilled and knowledgeable nurses as the work can be very complex and involved. You will need to build strong relationships to effectively act as the liaison between primary and secondary care institutions, individuals within these environments plus the patients and their family and loved ones. As with any nursing role, a nurse assessor vacancy demands the best interests of each individual patient as the primary concern. To qualify for nurse assessor vacancies, you must have completed your nursing degree (or diploma) and be registered with the NMC as an adult, child, learning disabilities or mental health nurse (depending on which area the job applies). Further qualifications in district nursing (BSc, Diploma or Certificate) would definitely be an advantage as would any further qualifications such as Non-medical Prescribing Certificate, etc. You will also need at least two years experience in community nursing and have been involved with teaching, facilitating and educational activities. To be successful in nurse assessor jobs you will need:
  • In depth understanding of registered nursing care standards, ethics, contribution and scope of practice
  • Knowledge of the latest developments in the care of the aged, frail and older persons
  • To be up to date with the latest in wound care ideas and technologies
  • Understand of best practice in the management of chronic diseases
  • Experience and knowledge of community care services and the provision of these services
  • Awareness of the methods and regulations regarding care and protection of vulnerable adults and children
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Up to date knowledge of assessment methods and skills
  • Flexibility to respond rapidly and appropriately in the patient’s best interest to any changing circumstance, legislation or care provision
  • The ability to work both as part of a team and independently as required
  • To be computer literate with good IT skills
  • To be able to manage stress both within yourself and in those around you
  • The ability to manage aggressive patients, family and friends
  • A passion to use your knowledge and skills to help people live the highest quality of life possible
  • Excellent organisational skills
Roles in admissions avoidance assessments have become increasingly popular. Patients and treatment are assessed, normally in the Accident and Emergency (A&E) or Clinical Decisions Departments, to ensure optimum care and treatment, prevent unnecessary hospital admissions and to ensure appropriate referrals to the community healthcare team. This helps improve both the patient quality and the cost effectiveness of healthcare services. You can jobs on a full or part time basis and the hours can be flexible according to the employer and the specific needs for the role. There are also permanent and temporary, fixed or short-term contract vacancies available on a locum or ad hoc basis. Nurse assessor jobs are available within the various NHS trusts and in the private healthcare sector. You may also find a nurse assessor vacancy in private practices. Using your skills and knowledge in nurse assessor jobs to ensure nursing standards are maintained within the nursing profession; to help patients access the most appropriate healthcare service and support for their needs; to inform and educate colleagues and communities regarding the different support structures available and how to use these; and knowing you have made a direct, valuable difference to people’s daily quality of life offers great satisfaction and a sense of fulfilment.
